2500HD 4X4 transfer case chain question...

There seems to be a lot of 2500HD owners in here...I've got a question for you...

I drive a 2001 and take care of it...I have 155K on it and it has been pretty bulletproof but I'm getting a new noise I don't like...

when I back up and then stop and go forward I'm getting a "clunk" that sounds like a bad yoke/u-joint but it's not...I recently had u-joints changed and drive shaft balanced...everything is tight...

I am suspecting its a stretched chain in the transfer case...anyone else had this? Is this a major deal to fix? How much did it cost to fix?

I'm not a "mudder" and basically use the 4WD to keep from tearing up ranch roads (back when we used to get rain)

Just curious if anyone else has had this problem..

I also have an 01 2500 HD 4x4 and have the same noise. I have asked a few of the local mechanics about it and nobody can give me an answer. I myself would like some info on this issue.

Process of elimination on mine it almost has to be in the transfer case. If you haven't done yoke/u-joint check on yours you might want to start there...we have long drive shafts and no carrier bearing and my rear u-joint was about done at 150K.

BTW, it wasn't bad...at the driveshaft specialty shop I went to it was about $140 with tax to drop the driveshaft, balance it, and put in new u-joints. thats a whole lot better than throwing a rear u-joint at 70mph and thrashing your truck. That can get really ugly.

Probably just starting to get wear in the ring & pinion. Also not sure if they have a thrust bearing but could also be the problem. And lastly, believe it or not weak springs can cause that due to excessive movement caused by axle wrap.

you would'nt feel slack in the transfere case unless you were in 4wd.......my 02 duramax does it too ! I always felt like it was excess gear clearance in the rear diff.
I know of several gm's that have this very issue and it has not progressed passed an annoyance to date.
