    AR-15 fans...need some help with upper selection

    I have a new LMT lower and was orignally set on getting an LMT upper as well. Been searching gunbroker, m4carbine, AR15, and other sites for an upper. Found a few but for some reason I keep coming back to this one:

    YHM Carbine Lightweight AR-15 Top End

    Features Include:
    * Mil. Spec. Forged 7075-T6 Aluminum YHM Flat Top Upper Receiver
    * "T" Marked Upper Receiver
    * Forward Assist
    * Mil. Spec. Bolt Carrier Assembly
    * 16" Chrome-Moly Vanadium Steel Barrel, Heat Treated to RC 25-32
    * Chambered in 5.56 N.A.T.O., Chrome-Lined with either a 1:9" or 1:7" Twist
    * YHM Diamond Fluting Improves Rigidity and Aids in Barrel Cooling
    * YHM Phantom 5C2 Flash Hider / Compensator (YHM-28-5C2)
    * YHM Carbine Length Lightweight Railed Handguard (YHM-9631)
    * YHM Forearm Endcap (YHM-9484-B)
    * YHM Front Flip Sight Tower (YHM-9394)
    * YHM Flip Rear Sight (YHM-9680)

    Haven't found anything negative on the web about it. YHM is backordered but I found a couple in stock online.

    Let me get your input.

    YHM makes good stuff. It's not the same quality as LMT but for the average person, the YHM will serve you just fine. Get the 1:7 twist if you can find it.

        Don't get too caught up in it brother.. Get what flips your trigger.. I've shot a few different AR's in some fighting rifle classes and that armalite sbr w/ a bushy chrome lined barrel I just painted never failed me once..But, my bro's brand new LMT upper did (sheared the bolt key clean off) so there you go..

        If you like YHM then get it.. I personally like a mid-lenght carbine if its not going to be a sbr..

          Leftridge...I'm kind of new to this. When you say midlength...is that just a longer barrell (over 16")? What barrel length or total upper length would be midrange?

            It refers to handguard length and gas block placement

            Carbine
            Midlength
            Rifle

            The pic you posted is carbine length

              Thats easy. GO GET A LARUE and be done with it! But really, I just picked one up the other day and I really cannot describe how awesome it is. They build full auto versions for special forces and private contractors in Afganistan and Iraq. They really know what they are doing. They have rifles coming back after a 6 month to 1 year tour of duty with in upwards of 20,000 rounds fired through them, beat to he!!, and still running strong. They also come with a lifetime guarentee. But that is just my opinion. Good luck.

                No, it mean a mid-lenght gas system...The short of it is you keep the barrel lenght the same @ 16" then you extend the handgaurd out down the barrel about 2-3" more than the handgaurd in the photo of the one you posted..

                Functionally it provides you more room for your hand to be comfortable holding your gun (where you are confined to the shorter lenght on the regular carbine)..More importantly it pushes your front sight post out a little further giving you a longer sighting radius- which typically equals better acuracy for most shooters..

                It also just looks better, imo..

                  Ok. Thanks for the info guys.

                  Gbeard...Larue is nice but out of the budget/priority list. Just looking for a decent build. I'm usually a "top of the line" guy when it comes to gear but I've got a lot of stuff ahead of the AR15.

                    I hear that. The guy from larue actually highly recomended Stag Ar 15s if budget was an issue. The guys over there are fantastic and will help you any way they can. But like I said they really seem to like Stags. Then you can always stick a Larue 9 inch hand guard on it.

                      I forgot to mention ( and you may already know this) that Stag is actually owned by Continental Machine which manufactures most of the parts for the military (Colt, Bushmaster, ect...) and has been doing so since the vietnam era. Origionally they only made the parts but then began producing complete rifles. They are some of the best rifles out there.

                        Bobby,

                        I picked up an LMT 16" complete upper for 650 delivered on ar15 the other day. Just stay at it, checking as often as possible. I also picked up a used but in good condition KAC RAS M4 rail for 90.00! It was a steal!

                        For what it is. I love YHM. That is one sweet looking AR.

                              I didnt realize that they could be found for so cheap. The Marine Corps uses them on there SAM-R rifles. Knights makes some dang good stuff.
