    Effective Draw Weight

Buddy and I went to the lease to test the distance from the stands to the feeders. Mine was right on anywhere from 12-25 yards. His was lacking. The longest shot as of now is at 25-28 yards. Well, we went to the archery shop in Victoria (Randy was"working") and tested the draw weight on his bow. 46 POUNDS!!!! We were both floored!!! We immediately cranked that Betty up to 55 and practiced with it. What kinda draw weight is required to DEFINITELY kill with a fixed blade for that range (assuming shot placement correct, of course)?

my wife's set up is 40# with 26 in draw and the ram she shot is for sure dead!

20 yard shot with a 85g slick trick.......... less than 10 yrd recovery

All things concidered, your set up was enough to kill as it was. It increases your chances conciderably if you shoot a heavier draw weight. That translates to more FPS (feet per second), KE (kenetic energy), and Momentum. So shoot the heaviest weight you are comfortable with and can shoot accuratly. If you are having trouble grouping at 20 yards, back the weight down. Remember nothing beats a well placed shot! Good luck this year.

What weight is the bow spec'd to be?

I've shot a 54# recurve clear through pigs and deer if I avoided the shoulder blades.

Ive watched my daughter kill several hogs in the 125lb range with a 22" draw and 32lbs with a magnus stinger getting pass throughs. She shoots 45lbs now and has shot through everything with it and stingers.

I killed a bunch of pigs with my 45# Ben Pearson recurve. Complete pass through when I used Zwickey broadheads and cedar arrows. Still killed them with aluminum arrows and Bear Razorheads, just didn't get pass throughs. Probably because the arrows were lighter.

I have heard of complete pass thru on pigs with as light as 25lb. draw shooting Mangus BH's.
