    Deer Feeders

Starting from scratch. Would like suggestions on feeders (corn) - home made vs big box store bought, hanging vs tripod, 30 gal vs 55 gal, 3 leg vs 4 legs, built in ladder vs no ladder, fence around feeder vs no fence, and/or anything else you can think of.

Looking for the best overall feeder option and need to pick up between Plano and Panola County Texas.

    Thanks!

A dependable control box/spinner w a dependable timer mechanism like "the Timer" or Texas Hunting Products' timer would be my first requirement

Second I look at capacity because I live almost 5 hours from my deer lease and a 55 gallon drum only lasts you so long.

Third...all the rest are just material and style questions....who, what, and where.

We use Big Horns w/ a 600lb capacity and "The Timer" control mechanisms

Don't buy the plastic stuff! The squirrels and coons will chew it up.

Get you an 85 gal winch up feeder with any control unit that uses the "Timer".

I build my own, they range from 55 gal drums w/ varmint guards and remington digital timers w/ custom camo jobs to 10 gal hanging feeders w/ remington digital timers for smaller harder accessing setups. I only live 130 miles from my lease though so filling em about every one and a half or two months. Have em throwing for 3 seconds twice daily.

                  I make my own.
I start off with a 55 gallon barrel with a good sealing lid.I ether go with a boss buck or a spin-tech for the timer/spinner.A leg kit from HCR and 4 legs and your good to go.

How does that capsule work? Does it just sit on the ground?

Tripod is the easiest to fill, well safest anyway. No climbing ladders, or standing on 4 wheelers, or tailgates. Just crank it down, fill it, and raise it.

I'm going to build a couple this week using 55 gal barrels, 4 legs and the timer will be about 4' off the ground with sturdy varmint cage welded to the barrel.
I want to make the legs short so I don't need to drag a ladder to fill them.

Is there a real need for the legs to be 8' long?

I would think only if you have cattle or pig problems........

I agree, the feeder in this pic is soon to be replaced with an 85 gal winch up feeder. I am getting too old and lazy to keep climbing ladders with a 50# sack of feed.

Winch up feeder - as far as timer or motor go with something good quality and it will save you in the long run. I run On-Time Solar Elite and happy with them. HCR are dependable as well.
