I don’t know anything about solar panels so here goes. I have a solar panel that I have had for years. I tested it yesterday with a voltage meter and it was putting out 11.43v-11.09v. Can I attach the leads to my battery on my feeder and keep the battery charged? The feeder is a 6volt and don’t want to damage the feeder. If I can’t use it for a feeder then for what?

U dont have enough info here! Is your SP 6v or 12v what is the max output? Does it have a blocking diode so it doesnt drain the battery at night? Some cheap older ones didnt. A SP can have voltage but not work and when you measured the voltage was it in direct sun light? You could damage the battery if the output is more than the battery is design for. If its a 6v SP and the output is within the battery limits then yes on attaching to battery leads. If u had it in direct sun light the 11v is pretty normal for one w/o a load on it if its a 6v, a 12v would be closer to 18 to 21v w/o a load. The voltage will drop to slightly above 6 or 12v once you attach to battery. To make sure its working though u would need to read the current under load, I've had many SP that would read voltage but not charge.Last edited by coop2564; 08-21-2009, 11:29 AM.

Well there is no infor on the SP if it is a 6v or 12v. A blocking Diode? have not a clue. No it wasn't in direct sunlight.
what would be a way to check it under a load?
