Many years ago in the Houston area several of the local archery shops and archery clubs formed teams and held a team league.
There was a huge traveling trophy that went to the winners shop/club for display for a year. The growing interest in the sport of archery has made me think it is time to try again to get the archery shops in the Houston area together to have a friendly competition.
I have spoken to several shops who have expressed an interest, so I would like to put out some ideas for discussion.
Each pro shop has a customer base from which to pick team members. Anyone you choose is eligible to shoot for your team.
The shop owner would be the manager/coach and decide who is on his/her team.
Each team will consist of 4-5 shooters (we will need to specify classes, i.e. Open, Bowhunter Release, Bowhunter Barebow (no sights), etc.).
Teams would be fluid (shops would field the same number of shooters in the same classes each month, but the actual shooters could change from month to month depending on who is shooting well or who is available).
LSBA AND TFAA classifications would be used.
Teams would receive points for wins, losses and ties. The team with the most points at the end of the season holds the trophy and bragging rights for the next year.
Salt Grass Archery Club will host the outdoor shoots and the shops would each have one indoor shoot per season.
Shoots will be 3-D shoots. OUTDOORS
Shoots would be held monthly.
THE NUMBER OF INDOOR "5 spot" SHOOT'S WILL DEPEND ON HOW MANY SHOPS with indor ranges want to join.
This competition would generate another level of competition within each shop, as the manager/coach can switch out team members at any time.
(except during the shoot itself), as often as he chooses.
This would encourage customers to spend more time at your indoor range practicing and proving his or her value to your team.
As I said, this is an idea I have had for a while and I want to know what you think.
Divisions with three or more shooters will be awarded a plaque for First Place. Divisions with less than three shooters will be awarded pins for First Place. You must shoot in the final shoot in order to receive a plaque.
If you are shown in the wrong division, your score is incorrect, or your name is spelled incorrectly, it is because
your scorecard and/or the sign-in sheet were illegible/incorrect. You may contact the webmaster
at webmaster@saltgrass.org to make corrections. If you shoot in two different divisions we will score
each division per the guidelines above.

Over the years Salt Grass Archery Club has received many requests for a money game. The top shooters spend a lot of time and money traveling the circuit and they enjoy an opportunity to duke it out not only for bragging rights, but for cold, hard cash. In response to these requests, the President of Salt Grass Archery Club, George "The Greek" Avouris, has come up with "The Spartans' Round".
The Spartans' Round is a difficult and challenging course designed to test the skill and the determination of the cream of the crop. The Spartans' Round is a positional shoot. This means no standing flat-footed at a stake and shooting straight ahead. Although the yardages may not be so tough, the angles and shooting positions will be. You will be bending, stretching and leaning to hit these targets. This is not a game for sissies and light-weights.
Anyone who feels the need for some serious competition is invited to participate. The Spartans' Round will be held on the same course as the regular 3-D shoots, but Spartans' Round shooters will shoot from special stakes. Mulligans are not allowed in the Spartans' Round. Spartans' Round shooters will pay a $10.00 fee in addition to the normal shoot fee:
Members - $10.00 shoot fee plus $10.00 Spartan Round fee = $20.00 total registration
Non-members - $15.00 shoot fee plus $10.00 Spartan Round fee = $25.00 total registration.
The first Spartans' Round was held at Salt Grass at the June shoot with five shooters competing in the inaugural round. The $10.00 fee goes in the pot for the top shooter. If there are more than 10 shooters, the club takes 20% of the pot. If there are 10 or less shooters, the club will not take a cut and the entire pot will go to the top shooter. In the beginning we will pay first place only. Once the game has become established and we are seeing consistently good turnouts, we will then start splitting the pots among the first 3 places.
If you are looking for an exciting, challenging new twist on a very old game, you've found it! Like the Spartans of ancient Greece - only the strong survive!

Salt Grass Archery Club is expanding the season! SGAC will now be holding shoots year round. Starting in September, we will host two shoots a month, the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month, through December. These shoots will include our new "Spartan Round".
The Fall League shoots will consist of 15 3-D targets and 14 Spot (Field or hunter) targets. Shoot fees will be as follows:
"Spartans"
Members - $20.00 ($10.00 for the club, $10.00 for the pot)
Non-Members - $25.00 ($15.00 for the club, $10.00 for the pot)
Non-Spartans
Members - $10.00
Non-members - $15.00
Mulligans
"Spartans" - No mulligans allowed on Spartan Round (Special stake,2 scoring carts.)
Non-Spartans - Up to 2 mulligans allowed, $1.00 each
There will be a handicap system in place. The handicap system will encourage more people to compete, resulting in larger pots. The first tournament will set your handicap for the next round. Here is how the handicap system will work: Say the top shooter has a score of 300 and you have a score of 270. We will take 75% of the difference between the scores (in this example the difference is 30 points) and that will be the handicap for the lower score. In this example the 270 shooter would have a handicap of 23 points, making his 270 a 293.
We believe this is going to be an exciting new game and the cooler temperatures of the fall season should make it a lot more enjoyable to be on the range. Come out and try it for yourself. Compete in all eight tournaments and watch your skill level increase!
