Here is the reason we have not run any Delta/ASA Indoor games this season. ASA and Delta have been working to modify the the Delta/ASA (D.A.I.R.) 440 Indoor round. Sorry guys. I had been sworn to secrecy about this until now.
The new game is called the 380 round. It consists of 10 three arrow ends (30 arrows). The shooter has a minute and a half (90 seconds) to shoot the 3 arrow end. The time does not decrease in the individual rounds. All ends are 90 seconds. In the elimination rounds the time limit is 60 seconds for three arrows. The goal is to shoot the low 12, the high 12 and the 14 rings. If the archer hits the low 12, high 12 and 14 the total for that end is 38. Ten ends x 38 = 380. You can only score the 12 rings and 14 ring once per end. Multiple arrows can be scored in 8 ring and 10 ring.
This game is also different in that the 12's and 14 have a penny sized ring in the center. Hitting this ring will give the shooter 1/100th of a point. This is designed to be a tiebreaker. For example if you hit the 12 ring your score is 12. If you hit the penny ring inside the 12 your score is 12.01. With the old game it was easy to end up with ties (if several archers "cleaned" the game). On the games we ran last year this happened several times. With the advent of the penny ring a tie will be virtually impossible.
ASA always tries its best to listen and satisfy the shooters. Some shooters did not like the decreasing time scale of the 440 game. Some shooters did not like being required to shoot an 8 (440 game required shooting an 8). In the 440 round if you double punched any scoring ring that resulted in a zero. In the new game you get points for every arrow unless you hit outside the scoring area. With this being said the 440 game can still be played if a shop or range chooses to shoot the 440. Essentially we now have two Delta ASA Indoor games.
ASA has big plans for this new game. The first step, is of course, to introduce the game to the archers. Possibly as early as next year we hope to start haveing ASA Indoor qualifiers at local archery shops across the nation. Shooters that qualify thru local shops would advance to bigger regional venues. Venues like CCR (Mike Tyrell with ASA and I met with Joe about this at the ATA
)here in the metroplex, the Easton Newberry Archery center in Florida, Lancaster Archery's facility in the northeast and others around nation could be used. These facilities would be linked online by a program that ASA is currently developing. The qualified shooters at the regional events will be competing in a national tournament, but only having to travel a relatively short distance to do so.
Gas prices, travel distances, and travel expenses have become a major concern to our shooters.
ASA and the Texas ASA Federation have been working to come up with innovative formats to make more events more accessible to more shooters. ASA national Pro/Ams will us a regional east/west SOY format in 2011. This will allow shooters to compete for SOY by attending 3 events plus the Classic. The Texas Federation has has expanded its schedule and implememted a regional format to get ASA to more shooters, allow them to compete for SOY, but requiring them to drive less. This new Delta/ASA (D.A.I.R.) game and regional venue format will achieve the same goal for indoor archery.
Here is a picture I took of the new target. These are fresh off the press but available from Delta. Here are the rules also.
