Those of you that are running bolt guns with thermals, what scope mounts are yall using? I have a Horizon Firearms Vandal X 22 creedmoor that I’d like to run my thermal on. My thermal is the Thermion XP50. I’m trying to figure out what scope mount would work. I don’t have an adjustable cheek comb on my stock. I’ve read some people complaining about cheek welds and eye relief when trying to run the thermal on a bolt gun.

Pulsar Scope Mount for Bolt Gun

Personally I’m a fan of mounts that can take accessory rails etc. I found it very handy to mount a flashlight on the rifle when thermal killing. Not so much to shoot with, but to leave the rifle pointed towards a kill in the field. Open the bolt, aim the rifle at the kill, and turn on the flashlight. Walk out and retrieve said kill while the rifle is left on the tripod. It’s pretty easy to get turned around in the dark once the shots started flying and having walked all over, and that method made retrieval much easier.
I typically stick with Badger Condition One mounts. I’ve got a couple Geiselle and Hawkins mounts as well. Luckily there’s tons of options for 30mm optics which the Thermion uses. I ran a Thermion XG50 in .92 Vortex rings on a bolt gun for a little while. Swapped to a Badger mount, but can’t find any pics of it. This is 1” 30mm rings and carbon barrel with similar profile to an MTU. Prettt da** close.

Sorry that pic had my heights backwards. That pic shows the .92 rings. I swapped to 1” for slightly more clearance. Then later swapped to a slightly taller Badger mount. Can’t remember the height I used on the Badger.

That was a 23” barrel with a 8.5” can though also. I’ve ran it in shorter rifles, and it’s not an issue. Current rifle doesn’t even dream of it, but I’m running a 16” 6 Creed with a clip on now. The 23” was a 22 Creed, and an XG50 with a 3X base mag. The XP50 would be more apparent, as it has a lower base mag and larger FOV.
Current rifle. I typically have my day optic set around 4X with a native 1X on the Iray. I can back all the way down to 2.5X on the day optic though. With the thermal being that close to the end of the barrel the native 1X isn’t an issue. It’s also at roughly 1.8” height.Last edited by TX03RUBI; 01-03-2025, 10:26 PM.

I have my XG50 in Nightforce Medium’s (1.0” height”) on my 18” M24 contour 338 Federal and they work great…I ran the same setup on my bolt 308 with Proof Bull and no adjustable cheek and don’t notice any difference between adj vs non. I don’t like the QR mounts mainly because I don’t want to keep track of different zeros on different guns and specific slots in pic rails…I like the KISS principle at night.
I am building another 16” bolt gun in 510 Whisper and trying to figure out thermal setup for it currently.
