    Savage axis junk

So yesterday I went to Academy to pick up the Savage axis. 223 that I purchased. It is a package rifle so I disassembled the the mount and rings. Everything was locktighted, rifle bore and chamber cleaned. Off to the range I went. The first shot i just about needed a block of wood, and hammer to extract the fired round. There was no sign of excessive pressure so I kept fighting the extraction to sight it in. I had problems with all ammo that I tried. I was using Winchester deer season xp, PMC hardball, and my handloads. The accuracy was more than acceptable, several three shot clover leaf groups with the Winchester. It didn't matter what brand i used you just about can't extract the fired case. I'm highly disappointed with this purchase. I shouldn't have to take a hammer to the deer stand. The only reason i purchase it is my surgeon doesn't want me shooting larger caliber rifles. So I guess it goes back to Academy, to be sent off to Savage.

I would inspect extracted brass to see if you can find any extraction marks indication of where exactly the shell is hanging up. Maybe take some bore paste and polish the chamber.

They sneak through with all the mass produced rifles. You just got unlucky enough to get one that got past them. Savage will make it right, but it’s a pain to have to deal with. Usually I’d say to do a little home DIY and see if you could polish/hone it out. But with it being that tight with a variety of different ammo, sounds like a chamber issue to me.

Dang, what a kick on the nuts.

I'd send that one back and pick up something else and start over - different brand while you're at it.

Not that I'm a savage hater (I have a few) but no use putting your money towards the company that left you in this pickle.

After going back to the range today still having the same issue. The only thing different today, is i don't need a hammer, with a block of wood to extract the empty. You only need to be He-Man to extract the empty hull. I still think it's a piece of junk, after it comes back from Savage I will reevaluate the situation.

Quality problems with all the newer guns. Savages have a very hard bolt lift, but never had sticky extraction. Every single Ruger American I've owned. 6 of them have had misfires, I will not own another. Bought a brand new Remington camo 870 Super mag that would not extract. I had to completely take the gun apart to unload it! Now I'm pretty much a handgun hunter. My Glock 10mm has never failed and my rifle is a basic 5.56 AR 15, I've never had a single issue with either. You could probably swap that axis for a Radical Ar15 and have alot better and usable rifle.

Interesting, but I guess it is possible. I would think they would proof fire before the gun leaves the factory.
I won a gen 1 Savage in stainless in a raffle and thought it was junk. Did a few things to it like changing the stock, trigger job, different bolt handle and it is one of my tack drivers.
It is a economy priced rifle, but mine is a shooter. I am sure Savage will make it right.

Wait till the Accu-trigger locks up on you!

Savage should include a rubber mallet with every rifle purchase

                    Sorry, this happened to you.
Like all things that are budget friendly and even some that are not there will be issues with some.

I will say that I am a Savage Fan Boy. I have my dad's Old 110E in .243, a late 80's 110 in .270, an AXIS II .270, and a regular AXIS .243 (Teal Camo for the wife LOL). The only rifle we have that is not Savage is a TC Compass II in 6.5 CM that was gifted my Stepson
I got lucky with the Axis (Walmart) and the Axis II (Bass Pro) and have had no problems and they both shoot MOA out of a sled.
The older 110's have very smooth bolt's where the Newer Axis and Axis II have pretty stiff bolts out of the box especially the regular Axis. There is a guy online who sells a bolt kit that makes the newer bolts a lot smoother.
The regular Axis also had a heavy trigger, so I got a spring kit from M-Carbo and the trigger is perfect for me now.

I am sure Savage will take care of the problem and it should shoot great, but I feel your pain when you have to go out of your way to get something right that should have been right to start with.
Let us know when you get it back.

unfortunately - Savage has had this issue for awhile..

I added the bolt lift kits and clamp on bolt handles from https://deshind.com/

I would shy away from the copycat sellers...

Make sure you didn't shoot .556

                          Try these.
Easily replace your Savage factory bolt handle for better control and faster bolt operation. We have the solution!

I dressed up my Axis and I love it. Boyds stock, Leupold Glass, Warne rings, and I cut 1.5 rings off the trigger spring for a better trigger. Shoots .223 MOA.

I’ve heard less than stellar things about the Axis. I have a 111 and it’s been a decent gun. Upgraded to a McMillan X-Bolt I found on sale and will never go back.
