    Rifle Advice Needed

My dad recently built 2 custom rifles using old Remington 03-A3 actions in .30-06. He glass bedded the actions and free floated the barrels. We started by zeroing them at 50 yards. We then moved to 100 yards, and they were both shooting about 12” high. I have 2 questions…what would cause this, and when you zero it at 100 yards is it going to be shooting very low at 50 yards?

I can't see what you describe actually happening. On at 50 and 12 high at 100.

Zero it about 2 in high at 100 yards which will give a 200 yard zero. Shoot it at 50 and see where it lands.

What are you using for scope mounts?

It did…we don’t get it either, so that’s why I made this post.

I'd take the scope and mounts off and start over.

I built 35 Whelen nearly 40 years ago on an 03-A3 action we needed to shim the Redfield base up on the front pretty sure in the instructions with the base there was some information on it

That makes sense. We’ll look into that. Thank you!

Could be some sort of height over bore issue. I’d get it zeroed at 100 and go on with life. With a 100 yard zero it may be a touch low or high at 50 but it’s not going to matter for hunting.

It will depend on several factors, but many short zeros for a 100 yard point of aim/impact would be in the 25 yard range or even a bit low at 25 yards. I can see a possible high point of impact at 100 with a 50 yard short zero.

Did you have it bore sighted?
