I’ve been looking around for a new scope. Ran across the Arken brand for a lower priced scope with all the bells and whistles of higher priced scopes. Some of them do have Japanese glass too. The model that is looking at is OVER 36 ounces! That seems crazy! I look up the largest Leupold to see what is weighed, (this was like a 7x35x56, $2500 plus dollar scope) and it was 32 ounces. Anyone here own or ever shoot with extremely heavy scopes? Granted, this will not really be a walking thru the woods squirrel rifle, but probably 90% used on the bench.

All of my scopes are heavy by hunting rifle standards. My lightest is 28 ounces, and my heaviest is 34 oz. I’ve had a few heavier. I’ll gladly pick up the extra weight for a high quality optics That said I typically try to keep them around 30oz or so. That seems to be a sweet spot with quality glass, reliable true turrets, and in mag ranges that I like.

I read somewhere recently that heavy scopes put more stress on rings and mounts, especially on larger caliber rifles and tall rings. I had never thought about it but it makes sense. The recoil of the cartridge jars the rifle back and the scope would remain stationary were it not for the rings and mounts securing it to the action.
On a similar note, I was recently told by a very good gunsmith that he prefers a bridge mount (on a bolt action rifle) over a two piece mount because it provides more stability for the action during discharge. Again, I had never thought about it but it makes sense.
