Public Hunting land

Hi All,

I have been looking for a lease for a while now, and no luck. So I have decided to do some public hunting and day hunts. I am new to Texas, so I have been doing all the research I can about draws and the rules and regulations. My questions are,
#1 Am I too late for a draw hunt?
#2 If not, any that ya'll could recommend?
#3 I am not looking for honey holes or spots people have hunted for years. Just a general area that i can scout on my own that would produce a harvest.
