I travel to Africa a lot with my adventure travel business. I take a lot of photos for our brochures and website. My limited ability in editing images probably holds me back and that's the area I want to improve.
Here is a list of some of the stuff I use for the better photos on my Flikr page. For some reason the uploaded photos on ******* and Facebook look junky compared to the originals or fairly originals...
Lenses: Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS, Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS, Canon 50mm f1.8
Other equipment: Sigma DG500 Super External Flash, Stofen Omni-bounce, Gary Fong diffuser, various filters, Bogen/Manfrotto tripod and monopod, Cable remote release, Gepe Card Safe Extreme, Tamrac Expedition 3 backpack, Pelican 1500 case, Tenba Shootout Backpack.
Editing software: Photoshop CS3
Experience: Started with Film SLR 20+ years ago. I've shot with a Minolta X370 SLR, Canon EOS Elan II and my current equipment.
Favorite shots: Love trying to capture all manner of wildlife. I'm most pleased with my hummingbird and deer photos. I'm hoping to give macro photography a try soon.
Gotta update after FedEx visited this afternoon:
Canon 300mm F4L IS
Other items not on the list: Canon BG-E2N Battery Grip, Kenko 1.4x teleconverter
Canon Xsi Body
Canon 70-200 mm 2.8L
Canon 70-200 mm 4.0L
Canon 100mm 2.8 macro
Canon EF2x II extender
Canon 18-55mm IS Kit Lens
Canon 70-300mm 4.0-5.6 Kit Lens
Naneu Pro Urbangear U120 Backpack
HPRC hardcase
Giottos tripod and head
I have been reading some of the post and noticed no one is using Nikon Capture. I may have missed one... I shoot NEF + jpeg, if I don't open my NEF file with capture then I've lost a lot of image due to the horizontal compression with nikon. The size difference of the final image is very appealing to photo editors.
Body: by Jenny Craig (Evolt E-500 and E-510, trading the 500 for a 520 next month)
Lenses: ZD 14-42 f3.5-5.6 (kit), ZD 11-22 f2/8-3.5 ED, ZD 14-54 f2.8-3.5, ZD 35-100 f2.0 ED, ZD 50-200 f2.8-3.5 ED, Sigma 50-500 f4-6.3 EX (it's a red letter day!)
Other equipment: Oly F50 flash, Bogen tripods and monopod, wireless remote release, filters, Gary Fong lightsphere II, other stuff that gets in the way and too small a bag.
Editing software: PS Elements 5.0 and CS2, Neat Image and Focus Magic
Experience: 54 years worth
Advice: Don't listen to Rod.
My how things have changed. I don't have either of these bodies anymore. Now have the E-520 and E-30 both with battery grip. Sold the 14-42 kit, Sigma and 14-54 I. Replaced with the Oly ZD 14-54 II and Oly ZD 70-300. Have set up studio and so far have two Vivitar 285HV stobes and two AB 800s. Various light modifying apparatus'. Editing using PS CS4
Other equipment: Nikon SD200 Flash, Cheap tripod, Pelican case, 2 kayaks, a little bit of vision, and one big imagination.
Editing software: Honestly, not really anything. I need some good software. One of these days...
Experience: I've been into graphic arts and design fora very, very long time. I developed an interest in photography in my very late teens and used a very finicky Canon EOS for a while before giving it up for a long time. I got into digital photography with a Sony Mavica in 1999 and kept upgrading until I finally got back to a DSLR with my D80 kit purchased in 2006. It's been a great ride ever since!
Favorite shots: I love shooting on the water, from my kayak. That is by far my favorite, and I especially like flora photography and catching the amazing waterfowl & other creatures of my waterways. I also really enjoy working with models when I can, but I find that it is very difficult to get the model you want who will carry the attitude you need, so I tend to prefer landscapes; they don't talk back.
