    Carter Evolution resistance releases

I got a new bow last year (PSE Mach 30) after 13 years with my Elite Judge, and it's time to change to a new release from my Spot Hogg Friday Night Special thumb release. I tried out an Evolution 20 at the local archery shop (3 yards from the bale to get the hang of a resistance release), and the owner lent it to me so I could try it some more at home. It would be a great release to eliminate punching my release (easier than trying to reprogram an almost 70-year-old brain!).

Does anybody shoot the Carter Evolution? Use it for hunting? There's another model called the Evolution Too, which looks interesting- it has the mechanism to prevent the release from firing if you draw while hunting and pull back hard and release the safety when facing an animal and adrenaline is pumping. You have to ease up in the valley and then release the safety to shoot.

    Thanks.

When my oldest son got into target archery he used the Evolution. I used a Silverback and then a Stan Perfex Resistance for a while. Probably the best I ever shot was when I alternated between a the Perfex Resistance and Thumb. That seemed to really keep me into "check." We both killed a couple of animals with them as well. For deer hunting in Texas, they are fine in my opinion. For when I'm elk/muley hunting it's probably not the best choice when sometimes shots just need to happen.

One big complaint about all resistance release back then was the inconsistencies with them. Carter just came out with a new resistance that uses magnets that is supposed to be better. I would be looking at that if I were in the market for one.

I bought an Evolution +.... many moons ago. So I can say yes, I have shot one. Yes I have hunted with it a few times (successfully). The Evolution Too is kinda noisy, as in it rattles while you're handling it. The newest version of this from Carter (as mentioned above) is the PPT (Perfect Pull Tension). It uses magnets instead of springs to set the tension. Carter says this provides a much more consistent break than the spring versions. I haven't tried one so I can't speak to that. I can say that overall a resistance release will humble you.... in good ways. If you don't actually pull.... it won't go off, if you don't grip it consistently, it won't go off consistently. Personally I don't think they're best used as a training tool or a means to get to somewhere, but plenty of people shoot them exclusively. The Stan Onnex Resistance is the only one I know that let's you clip on to your loop, the rest are open hooks.

I decided to order an Evolution (Evo) Too release, and I'll pick it up at the archery shop this week. Life's too short and I can't take the money with me wherever I wind up.

        Report to follow.....

I picked it up yesterday. It takes a little getting used to releasing on the increased weight from pulling, and doing it with my shoulder/ back and not forearm. I was shooting tighter groups indoors at 20 yards.

I made a wrist strap from an old paracord collar I’d made for our yellow lab years ago. I like my release attached to my wrist when shooting or hunting.

Well….. after spending 4+ hours trying to adjust the release, 2 calls with Carter tech support and oiling the release's sear, then a 90-mile round trip drive to the archery shop to have them adjust it perfectly, I’m at the range to do some shooting and the safety again will not disengage.

The archery store said to bring it back for a refund.

That’s my experience with the Carter Evo Too resistance release. I don't want to bad mouth the company or their support, it did not work for me.

No. I'm going to focus on shooting correctly with my Spot Hogg Friday Night Delight.
