I painted one with rust oleum camo paint. Worked well and held up great.

No I never thought of that. I don't want to spend more than $15-20 on this project (about 4 cans of paint, different colors of course)

I'll post some pics as I get started. I bought some Krylon Fusion paints at Walmart today, but I don't really like the green color and they didn't have brown. I just looked at Amazon and they have camo colors with Fusion technology. I think I will return the paints I got today and order the camo off of Amazon. I bought some acetone and I will sand the cooler and clean with acetone while I wait for the paint to arrive. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

I may do another cooler with the Rustoleum paints and see which holds up better.

I just painted a big old igloo orange with black webbing it looks sweet I read about modgepodge but I made my own with wood glue and water it seems to be holding up well. I cleaned it used a plastic primer painted it with two coats and before the second one dried I painted it with poly and indoor/outdoor top coat 1 coat each then rolled on my wood glue water mixture. if you hit it pretty hard the wood glue comes off but you cant really tell its just a little more glossy there. if you touch up the wood glue you cant tell its been redone at all even if you know it has been. dont worry when the wood glue looks like it is going to dry milky. the only reason it will is if you get too much pooled up the coats will just dry matte

I'm pretty sure I used Rust-Oleum Camoflauge. Just washed the cooler beforehand. I may have lightly sanded it (can't recall for certain) but I know I did sand the handle.

I also have a stake blind that I use to dove and duck hunt with that has been painted with the same and it has held up for many years.
