Old Center Pivot to Lowboy Conversion

Picked up this 1960 center pivot for $280 and with the idea of transforming it into a 10’ tandem axel lowboy trailer to haul my Polaris Big Boss 6X6.

The guy I got it from had a wrecker truck so we flipped it over and loaded it on my brother’s stainless trailer so we could begin the disassembly.

Pulled one of the hubs to see what I was working with and was glad to see that they were in good shape and from what I can tell are standard # 42 spindles (will verify) and should make good donor axels if my plan to extend them works like it currently does in my head. (we shall see)

Grabbed the impact wrench and cutting torch and got to work on removing all the steel from the bottom of the bed.

The bed of the trailer is made from 4 pieces of plate that have been bent and welded together. All the rust seems to be surface, although on top of the bed there is some pitting, but we can address that later. Nothing at this point needs to be cut out and I have high hopes that I’ll be able to salvage everything as-is.

Had two of these that I’m not sure if i will use at all, but will have to do something with them.

Found a steel shop that sells drops for $0.30/lb and picked up all I should need to do the axels, tongue, and stiffen it up a ton. $130 total spent on steel.

Had a few hours this morning and got the bottom close to complete and ready to mount hangers.

This extra 450 pounds of steel sure beefed her up quite a bit.
