    Alaska Vacation

My family of 4 is looking for vacation options and Alaska has always been on the top of my list. It would be my wife & I along with daughters ages 17 & 21. Not looking to hike mountains...but more of a site seeing trip. My kids would love to see whales and other wildlife. I'm looking for suggestions on where to go & what to do.

    Thanks

Brandon, we went on an Alaskan cruise a few years back. Our twins were about 13 at the time and had a great time. Tons of sights. Cool excursions at each stop. Saw glaciers, bears, whales, eagles, etc. Beautiful scenery and covered lots of territory. That being said, it was much more "touristy" than I preferred to first experience Alaska, but I'm not the event planner in the family...I'm just the finance department.

Thanks. I've thought about a cruise, but think I'd enjoy being able to just tour with no time constraints.

Agree. There were a couple of ports we'd have loved to have spent more time in.

A couple of years ago, I tagged along with my wife to Anchorage. She had a conference there and afterwards we rented a car and took in the sites. We went up to Denali and then back down to Whittier, Homer and Seward. At Whittier we took a cruise to see glaciers and mountain goats. It was early May and the goats were down low having babies. At Seward, we did a whale watching tour. Gray and killer whales were seen. The scenery was outstanding. Do it. You won’t be disappointed.

Thanks... this is the type of info I'm looking for.

We just returned a couple of weeks ago and went with three other couples. It was fun overall but I agree with what Curt said above the one we took was touristy. Don’t get me wrong it was a blast but longer in a port or two and maybe a fishing trip.

Do a quick search here as this topic has been discussed a couple times recently

We’re two weeks out to our first trip to Alaska. We have a lot sight seeing/driving planned and a couple of structured fishing trips books.

We are thinking about doing the train ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks and then renting a car and driving back to Anchorage. While in Anchorage you could go to Whittier and do a fishing trip or site seeing trip.

We looked at this, decided to do it via vehicle at our own pace. Route up will be thru Denali and route back will be thru Glenallen with a jaunt down to Valdez.

We booked all our fishing trip months ago, and most were already getting booked up back then.

We went to Alaska several years back. Flew to Anchorage and rented a 24' Class "C" motor home and went ALL over Alaska for a week. Worked out well for us.

The glass topped train from Anchorage up to Fairbanks is a spectacular trip, at least as far as Denali! Wife and I did that on our own stayed in Denali and took a helicopter flight out to glaciers, a bus ride into the park that was saw all kinds of wildlife and did a bit of hiking. Just beautiful! There were several folks on that train that were going all the way to Fairbanks as part of the overland part of their cruise, so you can do both. We happened to have a friend that had a big boat in Talketna and we spent several days on it cruising and fishing for halibut. Have been back many times to Alaska and it never disappoints!!!

Roads in Alaska were 10x better, smoother, wider than I ever dreamed so this option is a very good one IMO

We just rented a 4Runner and drove from Anchorage to Denali then to Seward and the to Homer. Stayed at BnBs along the way. Plenty to do at each stop.

And you can go on short easy glacier hikes that are pretty neat near Seward. We also found one cheaper glacier boat inland on a lake, I think because it was ran by the State.

It's great there because there's stuff to do all over. Not like here at all.

Some friends always rent a car and ride the ferry to places they want to see.Works well for them.

Thanks for all the replies so far. For those that have gone, how many days are optimal? Is 7 days enough?
