    Nursing home help

This is super tough for me but my dad needs to go into a nursing home. We moved my sister in about 1 1/2 year ago to help out but she has just become worthless as crap.

We have really considered 24 hr live in help but unfortunately it won’t work out for our situation.

I want him in the best facility we can get him in but would like it to be in the Richardson/Plano/Rowlett/Garland/north Dallas area so he is close to me and my wife.

Does anybody have any recommendations or advice, I am really struggling here.

    Thanks

Wish I could help. Went thru this with my mom in 2008. Get everything out of his name if you do not want to self pay.

        A Place for Mom

        Senior Living Specialist

We just put my MIL in an assisted living facility to recover from a broken vertebrae in her back. Be forewarned, these “helpers” will call and email IMMEDIATELY when you enter your information.

I know thats rough. Sitting at a ER with 99 year old grandmom in law.

Blessed with every moment but a real struggle at times.

          Praying for ya.

From personal experience, no matter where it is, you have to be very involved to make sure they get even the most basic of care. I truly hope you find what you are looking for. Also, you may want to contact an elder care attorney to help with the process. The "system" is set up to take everything and anything of value and even has a "look back" period to reclaim gifts. It is mind-boggling.....

Does your dad need skilled nursing or would assisted living meet his needs?

                    Skilled nursing.

He setup long term care insurance many years ago and I think that will cover a good part and maybe his veteran benefits will cover some

Can't help with a place, but my dad had the same benefits as you mentioned and it really helped. Praying for both of you.

Just heads up on LTC, most of those have an "Elimination" period that you have to cover (Typically the first 100 days). Hopefully the veteran benefits will cover it in that window.

As you look, ask what their patient to staff ratio is. I think 4-5:1 is typical but you don't want something higher if he will need additional care.

Yep same here. My Dad is in an assisted living and runs him 5000 a month. The trick to use his long trem care is to get 3 things he has to have help with, say Medicine, clothes and baths. Then the insurance will kick in. Otherwise they turn you down. And they will turn you down at first no matter what, just have to stay on them!! It pays more than half. Good luck, it's not fun to deal with.
                          It's hard on everyone involved.

I have been in and out of a lot of those places testing water for water management programs. All I can tell you is the inside runs like the outside looks. The places that do not look well kept inside or out are run exactly the way they look. I have seen virtually 0 exceptions to this statement. I’m sorry y’all are going through this.

What we found when my mom was going into a home was they expected you to self pay until you run out of money and then your other benefits would start paying. It's very stressful deciding what to do.
