    Cool Snake

After spending 8 days at the ranch this week and seeing multiple coachwhips out and about, I almost stepped on a snake I’ve never seen on our place and thought I’d never see anywhere. He/she was 30”-34” and y’all tell me different but I am 99% positive it’s an Eastern Hognose. Mills county.

30-34" is a biggun. All the ones I've ever come across were about the length of an average copperhead. Those are some toad eating suckers. The can put on quite a drama show too.

Neat looking critter. Never seen one in the wild.

First they raise up like a Cobra and when that doesn't work they rattle their tail like a Rattler and if that doesn't work they flop over on their back and spit blood all over like they just got crushed under your tire. They are dramatic little guys.

That's the same kind of cobra I saw in the feed room of the barn when I was a kid. I through a gallon coffee can of hen scratch at it and ran like hell.

Not sure how they smell but I’m sure I’d smell pretty bad if I almost stepped on it.

Had one as a pet, when I was a kid !
Took him outside to walk and he ran away.
Or rather slithered into the bushes.
