    Addax questions

So I've been offered a chance to go hunt at an addax, considering I don't know anything about them I figured I would ask yalls advice.

Should I use rifle or bow? How spooky/tough are they? If rifle what caliber do you recommend?

I'm only being charged 3500 and can shoot any of them. What is a good trophy size considering I'll probably never shoot another considering the normal cost?

What does the meat taste like?

If any one has one mounted and don't mind posting a pic please share.

    Thanks for any help.

Seems like a pretty rare hunt, not sure if I've ever seen one posted.

I shot one a few years back when they were going to make it a CITES permit to shoot. I used a gun and don't remember it being anything difficult. They taste great

I have killed one. They are good to eat just like all of the African antelope I have had. I would try to bowhunt if you like to bowhunt. Addax are high end on most ranches. They don't tend to get tons of pressure or get too spooky in my experience. I stalked mine and shot it at 45-50 yards. Most of them I have been around you could easily get 30-40 yards.

They seem like they would be pretty easy to kill.

That one is about 15’ from the blind.

Doesn't look they are spooky at all. Guess I was talking to the wrong person before glad I asked the green screen.

Personal experience here, but the lower the population, the less wild they are. By no means is this always accurate, but from what I’ve seen. Addax are pretty tame overall.

That seems like a smoking deal, gotta try the bow at that price point.

They taste pretty good. Much better than whitetail and axis in my opinion. For 3500 you can’t beat it.

                        Vote for Bow

Shoot it with your bow and get it scored (Texas Bowhunting & Bowfishing Records). I can almost guarantee it'll be in the top 4 in the state.

The meat is very good. Both the cows and bulls have horns and shooting either is "acceptable" although the bulls will generally have heavier, shorter horns than the females. They are herd animals and will run together in groups. The bulls generally have darker faces than the females and if you can get a look, you'll usually see the "button" on the underbelly of a bull as evidenced in post #8. Look for a full double curl in the horn with trophies being 26-30" long. You'll be able to tell an upper trophy if it has 10" past the second curl. Once they know they are being hunted they can get a little skittish, It will depend on how more hunting pressure they receive on this ranch.

The price you are being quoted in very good. Most places running hunts are $4.5-$6k on these. They make pretty cool mounts. Even though I have one, at that deal, I'd probably take.

They do have very thick hides the higher up the neck and shoulder you get. Keep shoots middle of shoulder and bottom 1/3 if you can. Rifle anything .270 and above will do the job with a .30 cal probably being better. Bowhunting would be cool, just remember that shot placement on African stuff is more forward than our WT.
