Field corn vs “deer corn” for broadcast feeders

I see a lot of farmers selling “deer corn” by the 55gal drum for around $35/drum. Will this corn clog up the feeder? Is it worth the savings over bags of Walmart/academy/co-op cleaned corn?

Field corn, IME, has too much trash in it. Pieces of cob, leaves and stuff that will stop up a spin feeder. I'd look at it before I bought it.

If you buy uncleaned corn, be sure you get some 1/2" hail screen to pour the corn through as you fill the feeders so you can filter out all the trash that is large enough to stop up the feeder.

$35 for 5.85 bushels is a rip off.

Depends on what condition his combine is in.....you could get too much cob from a combine

What’s the going rate then? Comparing to the retail 40 lb bags, that would be approximately $4/40lb vs 6.50 or so.

I paid $6.50 per 50 lb bag this week. Before my local mill went out of business due to owner age, I bought it in bulk, using a spare plastic rolling trash can which would hold 600 lbs. Easier to dip it out in buckets and carry up the ladder than to carry a full bag up the ladder, and it was about $1 per 50 lbs less expensive too.

When I was hunting in La Salle county, I went to the mill with my trailer, put a blue tarp in it and they filled it up--1200+ Drive to the feeder, dip it in buckets and fill 'em up. I had a 2x4 frame with 1/2" hardware cloth that fit over the barrel top to screen out trash.

Guaranteed to have "trash" in it.

That’s bagged corn that has been cleaned, and tested a couple ways...

If he hauls it with his fuel and time to the elevator he is going to get 3.89’ish a bushel at current contract rates. Bushel is 56lbs

Essentially if I’m picking it up, I wouldn’t pay more then future/elevator market price. He is already saving off market transport costs.

Deer corn is cleaned, moisture content tested, aflatoxin tested and bagged via cleaned weight . So if you aren’t getting those services, including getting more corn per volume because it’s cleaned, their is no reason to pay a premium over elevator price, if that makes sense.

Cleaned and dried makes a big difference and is well worth the difference in price.

Just because it comes out of the field, doesn’t mean it’s trashy. You can close down the grate to get cleaner corn. Best thing to do is buy some 1/2 inch hardware cloth and pour the corn thru it.

Just set your combine better, it takes less than two minutes to make it blow the trash out the back with more air, little tricks all over the machine, you see more trash when you try to take as much to the elevator that you can get away with, like broken cobs, buy a modern combine, 300k gets you a really good one, 100k and get ready to break down a lot, then sell cheap to your friends on turnrow, You shouldn’t charge your friends anyway

You guys are not figuring in the PITA factor. Farmer has to charge extra for that. Whole lot easier to dump it at the mill than deal with the public.

I run combine run corn all the time. I get it from a farmer buddy. Straight out of the grain bin. It has a piece or 2 of cob and mostly if anything it has dead grasshoppers and pieces of stalk. I run 12 volt units and have never really had any issues with it. I fill syrup tubs with corn and drive around with it on the back of the truck. The lighter trash usually sifts to the top and i just toss it out when filling feeders.
