Who’s been to Platoro Reservoir in SE Colorado?

Planning a trip next summer to Lake Platoro in southeast Colorado to do some trout fishing and get our mountains “fix”.

Has anyone on GS been there? We aren’t campers so will stay in a town with a motel and commute to the lake. I know it’s a bit of a haul, but we don’t mind.

Looking for suggested towns, motels, or closer lodging but not super “spartan”. Also which part of the reservoir you fished, and any tips or suggestions you may have.

We’ve never been there so even the most basic advice is appreciated!!

We tried to make it up there this past summer but werent able to due to snow still on the road...heard it's really beautiful! We got on the trail right outside of southfork to go to Platoro, so Southfork would be a decent place to stay I would think! Dont know if theres anything closer than that offhand or not. Wish I could help ya on the fishing end of it, but we didnt make it!ha

That’s actually very helpful! Thanks. How did you hear about Platoro?

We camped there for a week when I was a kid. Can’t remember much but remember it was beautiful and the fishing was off the charts. Caught a 8lb rainbow and a 9lb Brown.

Several years ago we fished up that way. We stayed at Elk Creek campground and were fishing the Conejos river but drove up to Platoro several times. That is one rough road as I recall. Seems like there was a smaller lake called Mix lake where we caught a bunch of rainbows on spinners late in the evening. Don't know about places to stay around that area though.

There are cabins on the lake you can rent from what I remember. That road is long and rough. Been years since Ive been but seem like it was 45-1hour down that road to civilization. They had a fly shop, and a limited store to get ice and stuff. Cool place. We fished the reservoir, the river, and actually took a off road trail up into the mountains and fished a pond for Snakeriver Cutthroats. The reservoir has rainbows, browns, and Cocanee Salmon. There was another area that was supposedly full of brookies but we never made it there. I would love to go back sometime. Enjoy.

The town of Platoro has several cabin rentals, the owner of the store there lives in Hamilton. You could also stay at the cabins right down the road at the Rocky Mountain Lodge Store.

Went on our honeymoon there last summer. Awesome place!!! Never caught any fish, but rented a utv and rode around 80 miles a day in the mountains. Several other lakes close. Some has fish, some don't. Best part is no phone service.

Been several years ago now. We came through Chama in hwy 17 to Forest service 250. The FS road is long and somewhat rough. Town is remote and there wasn’t any fuel in town when I was there.

Fished the reservoir-it was phenomenal. Caught plenty of trout and kokanee salmon. Mix lake was loaded with rainbows. The canejos river had solid brown trout. Scenery was spectacular.

Always wanted to go back- think about the trip often.

Did you drive in and fish then leave same day or did you stay at Platoro?

I have been there several times - a friend has a cabin on the Conejos river. I remember that in the vicinity of his place is Rocky Mountain Lodge - not a motel but rental cabins. It is about 45 minutes (I think) away from Platoro down 250 - the gravel road that runs all the way from highway 17 up to Platoro. That road is a bit rough and but it is a beautiful drive up to Platoro and the road more or less parallels the river. There are lots of places you can just pull over and walk down to the river and wet a hook.

Believe me you will not want to drive that road every day, rent a cabin there and you can thank me later.
