    small in-laws house vs barndominiums

We are looking at building one or the other on our land to move my in laws into this fall. A friend said do a barndominium because of the tax appraisal. We are only looking at building 1000sq place for them. Would there be a huge increase in property tax?

Barndo all the way. Simple, efficient, and you can make them just as fancy as any regular house

          What's your definition of huge?

Your property taxes will go up. By how much depends on how much the structure is valued at.

1000sq ft is it. I know it will go up.

Have you looked into on of the tiny house/park model cabins. They are titled as an RV so the county can't get in your pocket. SugarBrook makes some beautiful stuff.

Metal siding is the least expensive when it comes to county taxes. It will be less. HOw much less depends on how you were going to do the house.

I agree with 175gr, tiny house on blocks. 1000 ft is the size of a 3br trailer home. Do they need all that? Are they coming to your house for dinner each day? A 600ft 1/1 should keep them happy and not cost more than 200$ in taxes

Barndo, just thinking ahead when they may no longer be there, and what you can do with it after.

Do the barndo, call it an implement barn, 100% savings over the increase you are asking about.

As soon as my kids graduate HS I'm getting out into the country and building a barndo with this exact plan to avoid the highway robbery Nueces County performs yearly.

It will still be taxed at average price per square foot as it is residential no matter what you try and say with county. If you pull permits for plumbing, electrical and such the county has a right to inspect and will do so. Unless the construction is under the table cash deal most do tractors require the permits due to their licenses. If you have to finance the loan company y requires the permits for construction to ensure what they are loaning money for is built to standard code by licensed tradesmen. If you lie and say it is an implement barn and they find out it's not, look out friend they will break it off in you for back taxes...

SEPARATE building. That's my only opinion on the matter. And make it nice enough they want to spend most/all of their time there.

As mentioned above if possible a separate building of whatever type would be best imho. If possible and feasible try to make the accommodations compatible to what they are accustomed to living in. Dealing with aging parents can be very trying at times from my experiences but it is part of life. Good luck!!
