I'm ok with it and have no problem traveling if I want to play games.

Lots of problems are created with gambling. Sure some people can handle it but many cant.

The recent closing was due to the governing body over horse racing being underfunded so they had to cease operations. The way I understood it this was no more than a ploy to root out some members of the organization they wanted rid of.

Either way, funds were released for it to return to operations and the fall racing season is on schedule.

Is this the part where I'm supposed to respond but not offer my opinion on the topic?

Oh, you can offer an opinion, just as long as it is the right opinion.

It was my understanding that poker tournaments in bars are legal as long as the house (the bar) doesn't profit and all money gets paid back out? This is how it was explained to me.

Temporarily while they gather further solutions to the problems that caused the initial shut downs.

Although it's easy to point to bible thumpers, the main reason gambling is illegal in Texas is the lobbying efforts conducted by the surrounding states.

Seriously, go to Lake Charles for a weekend. Both the Golden Nugget and Laberge are booked solid on the weekends the entire year. Then check the parking lot. It's 80% Texas plates. If there was gambling in say Galveston, those guys over in Lake Charles would loose a considerable amount of their business. Same goes for that OK casino that's not far from Dallas. I'm sure the NM casinos would be in a similar situation if there were more viable options in Texas.

Another deal is the Texas government hasn't been hurting for money the last few years with all the O&G plays that had been going on. With that said, I guarantee you, if the price of oil hangs around $45 for an extended period of time, there will be a major push to get gambling passed in Texas.

well I just went to the sam Houston race park website and it looks like they are back in operation. I read an article that was posted on facebook that the TX racing commission lost funding. I went to their website and they state on Sept 9 they went back to service. so I was wrong apparently.

                                this is good news.
