Matty surf 8/29, no bueno. :(

Been seeing the glassy conditions on the surf reports and knew the green water would be in, so a buddy and me headed to Matagorda to try our luck in the surf. It was a beautiful afternoon. We got there at high tide and fished the falling tide from 2:30 to about 5:00.

In all that time, he got one strike on a topwater and I didn't get a single bump. It was dowright depressing. The water looked great. We were seeing the occasional school of finger mullet and every now and then, a ball of big mullet out a little further. Once, a big black bait ball came rolling down but it was out of reach the whole time - there were fish around it though.

We drove up and down the beach probably 5 miles and didn't see anyone catching fish the whole time.

We finally left and went over to the Collegeport area to fish the bay, and around sunset the trout started biting. I ended up catching about 6 or 7 trout on red/white Cocahoe minnows (my standard for nearly 25 years now) while the moon came up behind us. It was a beautiful afternoon and early evening. Wish I had a better surf report though. I have no idea where the fish were. I hate leaving the surf when it's green.

I feel your pain. I strung 4 trout yesterday morning in Sargent. I caught them in my first 10 or so casts and then not another bite. Fortunately, the water was thick with 3-4' sharks and I had my surf tackle so we played with them for a while.

Its been too flat and clear for too long. The fish are on the bottom and are full from pigging out when it gets like this. We need a few days of wind to get the surf up and muddy again and the first day it clears up will have them feeding again.

Evening bite and they are eating all night. Moon went down yesterday at 6:45 am.

Sounded like a fun trip. I am no expert on fishing the surf, but I was always under the impression to fish an incoming tide, not outgoing. I don't know if this had any effect on your success.

I fished Matagorda Beach yesterday morning and struck out. Plenty of mullet in the surf just no fish. No slicks, no mullet jumping for their lives, no birds working. Just a weird morning. Water was beautiful, trout green for sure. I was about 9 + miles down the beach. I think this big full moon has them on a night bite. Moon went down about 6:40 in the morning. My wife did catch a nice pomp on fishbites. Tried tops, assassins, cocahoe minnows, mirro lures. If you can't get bit by something on white with red head mirro lure, just not meant to happen.

I'll go with that. Makes sense, actually.

A fellow stopped and watched me and my buddy fish for a while. We were both throwing topwaters. After about 15 min. I walked up and visited with him. Nice guy. He asked if we were catching anything and I said not a thing. He said "If they ain't taking that, they just aren't biting." Said he hadn't seen anyone catch a thing.

I guess sometimes that's just how it is.

The decision to leave the surf and go fish the bay was a good one. It takes a LOT to get me top leave the surf though, esp. when it's green.
