Been seeing the glassy conditions on the surf reports and knew the green water would be in, so a buddy and me headed to Matagorda to try our luck in the surf. It was a beautiful afternoon. We got there at high tide and fished the falling tide from 2:30 to about 5:00.
In all that time, he got one strike on a topwater and I didn't get a single bump. It was dowright depressing. The water looked great. We were seeing the occasional school of finger mullet and every now and then, a ball of big mullet out a little further. Once, a big black bait ball came rolling down but it was out of reach the whole time - there were fish around it though.
We drove up and down the beach probably 5 miles and didn't see anyone catching fish the whole time.
We finally left and went over to the Collegeport area to fish the bay, and around sunset the trout started biting. I ended up catching about 6 or 7 trout on red/white Cocahoe minnows (my standard for nearly 25 years now) while the moon came up behind us. It was a beautiful afternoon and early evening. Wish I had a better surf report though. I have no idea where the fish were. I hate leaving the surf when it's green.
