    Minion Method Question!

    Hey all,

For those of you that use or have used the Minion Method, have you ever used a mix of lump and briquettes? I have been using a mix of lump and Stubbs natural briquettes in my fire box, but I recently built a charcoal basket and wanted to try out the Minion Method.

So....is all briquettes better? is all lump better? is a mix better? all of the above? none of the above?

    Thanks!

I don't think it really matters. When doing the longer burns for brisket or pork butt, I always use lump to minimize ash but I don't really think that has an effect on the minion method. I use a a combination of lump charcoal and wood chunks and that seems to do just fine minion-wise.

I can tell you this....everyone has been doing the Minion method wrong.

The real way is to hatch a couple of kids and make them tend the fire for you...kids=instant Minions. Yellow paint optional.

I tried this but mine were apparently defective. I tried to take 'em back but apparently there was a no return policy.

This is awesome! However, I think I'll need to rent some kids.

In my limited experience lump works way better than briquettes

I had hell regulating the briquettes, got lump set and it maintained for 12hrs in my UDS

                Minion Method Question!

I think the briquettes last longer but the lump gives a better flavor using the minion
method. Mixing is fine. There is not much difference that mixing briquettes with the normal wood versus lump charcoal ...it's all good

Thanks! Now do I use true minion with burning coals scattered on top, coffee can or hole in center?

                    Minion Method Question!

Is this a stickburner offset or a UDS/WSM type?

It's actually a stick burner vertical. So it would be closer to uds/wsm. I guess....it's 1/4" steel looks like this....

As a vertical I would do the standard minion. Big pile of charcoal and wood and drop the lit coals in the middle. In the WSM, I have a lower space of charcoal in the middle of the basket and pour it there. In the middle or on top should get the job done.

Thanks a lot, Jason. I'll give it a shot. Hope I get a good long burn!
