Tips on pricing a used car - kbb.com?

I may be getting my wife a new car in the next couple of months. In the past I've usually just traded in the old one - they usually have very high mileage and I just take what they will give me for the sake of convenience. This car however is less than 3 years old so I'm considering selling it myself. I've been doing some research on what her current vehicle may be worth - can anyone tell me how accurate the kkb.com prices turn out to be? They show trade-in value at at $13,500 and private seller value at about $15,500. I see the exact vehicle with comparable mileage listed at cars.com and elsewhere for $16-17,000 from private sellers and higher than that at dealerships.

For you more experienced auto wheeler-dealers - given the above ranges, how would you price it and where would you list it?

Im certainly no expert but for me it depends on how long I could wait it out. Those cars are listed but not necessarily selling at that price. They also are giving themselves wiggle room. I despise the whole bargaining process so I would list it at 15 or so and add FIRM to the description.

I habent sold in a while, but when i did i used nada, kbb, and searched area craigslist adds for similiar vehicles. I would then base it off of all of those numbers instead of just one such as nada or kbb.

I usually find that the KBB trade in value is pretty close to a realistic price to sell one. Somewhere between trade-in and private party.

Some guys really enjoy "the game" but I despise it as well. It's been over 20 years since I sold one myself. Our M.O. has always been buy new, put 180,000 miles or so on it, trade it in and start over. This is the first time I've tried to swap a fairly new car with a reasonable mileage on it.

KBB is hit or miss but tends on the high side of true value, imo. And when you put a condition value on it, read the fine print and notice that something like 5% of used cars fall into "excellent" and not many more into "very good."

Time is your friend when you sell a used car. If your asking price is anywhere near true value, expect to get some tire kickers that will test drive it and proceed to low-ball you.

What kind of car is it? Good luck!
