Cull to me is a term more for 3-4 year old deer. They aren't displaying qualities we want early so we cull them out.

Management would be used for a 5+ year old deer that showed enough potential not to be culled but just didn't turn out and isn't or won't end up as one of the top deer in his age class.

So is it fair to say that when you post that your deer in your LDP is a managmenet or cull, that you are bragging about your deer herd or as Jerp says, maybe you are embarrased so you give it that distinction?

Disclaimer: I am not saying bragging about your deer herd is necessarily a bad thing. I understand it can take alot of effort, talent and/or money to make your herd look they way you want it too.

That's about the best answer ever... and on the deer lease side, it's hard to sell cull in the package deal when telling a member what he gets to shoot for his lease fee.

I can see where that is misconstrued. I guess I put mgmt deer in my live hunt/LDP for the 10 above for two reasons... 1)...that's what he is on our place... 2) to not have folks ask me why I killed a 118" deer so early, when I shot a 137" deer last year. Folks that did not get to see the live hunt or subsequent LDPs nor are on TBH still asked me that same question so it's not just a TBH thing.

I'm never embarrassed about anything I shoot but if I was embarrassed for some odd reason, I just wouldn't post it.

The place I hunt on doesn't have management deer they have trophies and culls. And you better be **** sure that it is a cull before you shoot it, so needless to say we shoot does only 90% of the time unless the guy taking us is sitting with us and gives the green light.

Ha. Unfortunately this really is how most people look at it.

So we cull out our management bucks while we manage to kill our culls?

Started about the time it became "in vogue" to say it on TV shows...

Back in the 80's, we used to call those deer "bucks with character" and were proud to hunt them. With TV shows brainwashing everyone these days, it seems that some folks are almost embarassed if they kill a buck that isn't B&C anymore. I find that a darn shame.

Every deer is a gift and we are all very lucky to be able to hunt them.

If you want to make every deer a "trophy" (although I personally hate that term) then hunt with a traditional bow. Because once you do, I promise you that you'll be proud and pleased with ANY deer you kill. Saves money on leases and trophy fees too.

It came about from the economics of selling deer hunts. It was really easy to classify certain bucks into three catagories, trophy, management, or cull. In very basic terms each one represented a certain amount the ranch could sell the deer for.

They are all culled once you shoot them.

Folks put too much stock in scores..
If the difference between 135" and 145" is that important to you maybe you should play golf.

For the most part, to me they are terms that folks use to justify shooting their deer so folks on the GS don't take pot shots at them for shooting a smaller/ugly/younger/inferior deer. We can't all shoot 160-inch deer and in my opinion, any deer taken with a bow and arrow is a trophy! Be proud that you did it right--unless you shot it in a hog trap.

Culls are below avg bucks due to injury or genetics, mgmt bucks are usually avg for the ranch and the trophies are the exceptional deer above avg.

The terms came about IMO from ppl needing to justify shooting avg to below avg bucks on TV bc they weren't forking over the $ for the exceptional minority of deer on the ranch.
