So, i wasn't much of a student of history growing up. But here lately, i've become more interested in history, especially American history. Mostly because i think there are many lessons to be learned from the past. A few weeks ago i heard this author interviewed on the radio. The host and author were discussing "A Nation Rising." So i bought the book and just finished it. I'm terrible at reading books. Unless the book is really good, i don't have the attention span to stay with it. I finished this book really quickly.
It's about the period of American history from the late 1770's through the mid- 1800's. A fascinating time in American and World history. I'd recommend this book on two fronts. It's a great read just for the factual information fleshed out about the time period. More interesting to me, is the connection we have today, to days gone by. We are most definitely a product of our past. In addition, it's interesting to think what might have been if one election, or back room deal, had gone another way.
My takeaways from the book: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Men of power and influence have always had their share of demons, and people are people. They all have their share of jealousy, envy, pride, etc.
America, for all the greatness we have wrought, has always had it's share of problems. America has never been as romantic a place to live as presented in many history books of years past.
I could go on and on. It's a great book. If you're interested in history, or want a better into insight into how we got where we are, give it a read.
