    Fan/Light switch installation question

Built our house 20 yrs ago, my father in law and I did all the electrical work- but I don't know **** about electrical wiring. In our living room we have two ceiling fans, both with lights. They have separate switches, both in the same location. Both switches have dimmers and fan controls for each light. I am 99.9 % sure one of my switches has gone bad. Went to HD and bought what looked like the exact same switch we had. So I pulled the cover plate off and pulled out both switches, planning on swapping out the switch that I feel is bad. Here is where it gets confusing. The "bad switch has two black wires going to it. One to each bronze screw. My new switch only has one black screw and a red wire (light) and yellow wire (fan) coming out the back. How do I need to wire this up ? Does the hot go to the black screw and then tie the other black wire to the yellow and red with a scotch lock ?

Sounds like there’s a transmitter in canopy cover above the fan. Need to verify cause that’s where it’s actually controlling the light and fan separately. If so then you need to get a new wall switch with transmitter so it’s compatible

Why don’t you just buy the same type of switch? The “old” switch you describe is just a standard switch. Why are you trying to change?

Not trying to change. I thought I bought the same switch/dimmer but when I took it out of the packaging it isnt exactly the same as the old one. Im thinking now there must be a transmitter up in the fan housing (like Splitbeam mentioned). Thats the only way it could be running the fan and light of just one wire. I will dig into it more this evening.
