Permethrin will push them away, spray every three days and they won't come back. It does not kill them, like others have said, it is the main food source for horny toads. Not sure where you are located or how big of a property, but permethrin will keep them away.

well I had that backwards…I thought it was the other way around
Here in the Victoria area we used to have LOTS of horned toads. When they disappeared 30yrs ago I was always told red ants was their main food source…and the fire ant invasion devastated the red ant population

Pour vinegar down the center of the mound. It will foam up like a volcano. Usually takes care of them.

I like Red Ants and haven’t ever had an issue with them, even sitting in a chair 3 feet from their entry. Having said that, if you want to kill just about any insect, use Dawn Dish soap (Any concentrated liquid dish soap will do) mixed with high pressure water will kill em through suffocation. If you want to get rid of one nest, pour some dish Soap down the hole and follow up with a water hose.

For a field, I'll spread Amdro. They carry it in and kill the nest. Around the house and garden I use Orthene for an overnight kill. I try to keep a buffer zone of a hundred yards of so between their house and my house. They will ruin a garden in the early stages of growth.

I use (Surrender)smells like rotten eggs; I just pour around the entrance and on top of some of the ants they will take the poison down with them and kill the queen. I only kill the ones in the vicinity of our home and leave the rest for the horny toads.
