After losing Seaven a few years back, my thoughts were no more dogs. Then after looking at SPCA/local shelter websites, I entertained the idea. Fortunately, every dog on their site that I was interested in got adopted before I could meet them. Fast forward to Labor Day weekend of 2024, Dena was telling she was getting another Jack Russell. Knowing their energy and being small that was a dog I had scratched off the list. Yet, I made the mistake of looking at their cuteness and ended up with a shorty Jack Russell. Thanks Dena Kana … I think lol
It was about 30 years since I had an actual puppy. Ugh, that meant I was 30 years younger!! Wow the energy a puppy requires and again add their breed to the mix. I did a puppy obedience class that was clicker training. I think Gemi learned to train me! She did okay but still so much obedience training needed with this puppy. Thankfully, Wayne recommended a trainer to me after hearing my issues. He introduced me to One Shot Retrievers (Grant and Alex Huff) and said go look up that Jack Russell “Gator the Duck dog.” I did the research and met up with Alex to tour their facility. My thought was if they can train a Jack to be a duck dog surely they can get Gemi to follow basic commands. I decided to enroll Gemi in their six week obedience training. I don’t know how gun dog owners handle months away from their dogs!!
Now Gemi knows sit, heel, kennel, and here! She is e collar conditioned and spends the days off lead exploring the yard and playing fetch. She is so much more enjoyable! Before sitting a watch TV with a Jack Russell puppy was not possible. Now she has is a lap dog when it’s TV time, goes to the barn and no longer pulls on a leash. I can honestly say that was money well spent cause now I have a Jack Russell that is obedient and I look forward to the many years with my new dog Gemi!
Thanks Wayne and Dena!
