Well, we got a tray of tomato seeds planted today... When the Cherokee Purple seeds arrive (Monday), we'll start them right away...

With the mild temps all Winter, and the warm weather predicted all next week, mighty tempted to stick some out early... BUT I KNOW BETTER!! Easter is early this year and we ALWAYS have that "Easter smap" as the old folks used to call it every year... With Easter so early, ain't no way I'm putting anything frost sensitive out until after that!

Can they be grown in containers? If so how large do the containers need to be?

We grow all our tomatoes in “containers”, grow bags. They are 10 gallon size. We plant our transplants extra deep, up to the first pair of leaves. Tomatoes like to be planted deep. All that fuzz on the young stems will turn into roots. Makes the plant stronger, more stable. Once they get big enough that they start to bloom, we add more soil/mix around them sort of like hilling potatoes. Throw in a balanced organic fertilizer then cover it with the soil around the arms and water them good. That makes them really take off!

You can get different size/quantities on Amazon. We’ve tried several brands and prefer the Gardzen brand. Have many of this brand on their 4th growing season.

My nieghbor is a botanist. She gave me some tomato plants I’ve never heard of- Pork Chop & Blue Villager.

I’ve ordered several types of seeds off of marketplace and have been pleased.

Occasionally I will get plants from HEB, I think last year I paid $1.50 for tomato plants which was a good deal. Lowe’s but they get costly there.
