Well today has been a rough one and it all revolves around this mornings hunt. So I'll start from the top. First I had 3 hogs come in and give me a shot at 20 yards, however I had some hand corn out that is 15 and I figured that they would end up there since I have not seen a hog that will pass up some corn and they were about 10 yards from it. So I pass on the 20 yard shot figuring on a 15, but they did not come to the corn and I did not get another opportunity, this was the first disappointment.
Second, I have been after a big 9 for the past 2 weeks. I have not seen a buck on stand and only a handful of does. Well as most hunters know is the smallest critters make the most noise. I had 2 squirrels chasing each other all morning behind me. At 8:30 I heard something making alot of noise and figured it was them but I took a peek anyways. When I did all I could see was antlers running towards me. There was nothing I could do he was coming in 180 degrees from where I was facing. Well he crossed the creek behind me and ended up 15 yards from the base of my tree broadside looking back the way he came (perfect position for a shot). I took this opportunity to spin around while drawing my bow, he never saw me and as I was bringing my pin down on him he just turned and started to walk directly away. I followed him with my pin figuring that anytime he will turn so that I can stop him and take a quartering away shot. Wrong again, all I got was the poop shoot as he was walking directly away. It wasnt untill he got to about 40 yards that he stopped and turned. I am confident at that range, but there was too much brush for an ethical shot. He milled around for a while and then left.
Lastly, while on the way out I saw a doe on one of our pipelines about 300 yds away, well she was not alone. A giant buck jumped the fence and chased her off.
So I finish the morning seeing 3 hogs, and 2 shooter bucks and was not able to get a shot off at anything. With rifle season starting next weekend I am going to try to get a couple sits in during the week because it gets real hard to see bucks when all the four wheelers start tearing up the woods and the rifles start sounding off. Rant over, this has just been a real frustrating season. This weekend was the first time I saw deer while on stand since opening weekend, and that has not happened in atleast 5 years.
