    Frustrating Day (long read)

Well today has been a rough one and it all revolves around this mornings hunt. So I'll start from the top. First I had 3 hogs come in and give me a shot at 20 yards, however I had some hand corn out that is 15 and I figured that they would end up there since I have not seen a hog that will pass up some corn and they were about 10 yards from it. So I pass on the 20 yard shot figuring on a 15, but they did not come to the corn and I did not get another opportunity, this was the first disappointment.

Second, I have been after a big 9 for the past 2 weeks. I have not seen a buck on stand and only a handful of does. Well as most hunters know is the smallest critters make the most noise. I had 2 squirrels chasing each other all morning behind me. At 8:30 I heard something making alot of noise and figured it was them but I took a peek anyways. When I did all I could see was antlers running towards me. There was nothing I could do he was coming in 180 degrees from where I was facing. Well he crossed the creek behind me and ended up 15 yards from the base of my tree broadside looking back the way he came (perfect position for a shot). I took this opportunity to spin around while drawing my bow, he never saw me and as I was bringing my pin down on him he just turned and started to walk directly away. I followed him with my pin figuring that anytime he will turn so that I can stop him and take a quartering away shot. Wrong again, all I got was the poop shoot as he was walking directly away. It wasnt untill he got to about 40 yards that he stopped and turned. I am confident at that range, but there was too much brush for an ethical shot. He milled around for a while and then left.

Lastly, while on the way out I saw a doe on one of our pipelines about 300 yds away, well she was not alone. A giant buck jumped the fence and chased her off.

So I finish the morning seeing 3 hogs, and 2 shooter bucks and was not able to get a shot off at anything. With rifle season starting next weekend I am going to try to get a couple sits in during the week because it gets real hard to see bucks when all the four wheelers start tearing up the woods and the rifles start sounding off. Rant over, this has just been a real frustrating season. This weekend was the first time I saw deer while on stand since opening weekend, and that has not happened in atleast 5 years.

Oh but you had so much fun with the highs and lows of hunting. I'll take a day like that. Ever since opening day all my deer have vanished from having as many as 15 deer at one time on TC before then. Good things happen to those who wait, or so I've been told.

Look on the bright side, you had one buck that you would be happy to take within 15yds of you and you also saw another large buck. I would be excited just to be that close to a big buck whether I got a shot or not

Maybe you will get one of them this week

Oh dont get me wrong, I am excited. However, I learn from History and my history on this place with mature bucks is that you normally get only one encounter. I have never had multiple encounters with the same buck in the same year.

Yeah that was me. I didn't know that was you till now. I was picking up some stuff for my new muzzleloader. I am kinda re-thinking my decision to get one cause dang that stuff is EXPENSIVE

I feel your pain brotha, I've logged about 40 hrs in the stand this year and have only had 2 deer in bow range. 1 is dead and the other was a 12.99 inch wide, tall 8 point I couldnt convice myself to shoot. Hope your season gets better

Yes it is but it is almost as fun as bowhunting. I went in and bought a new summit climber because I have no deer coming to corn during daylight, I am going to set up on an oak ridge behind my stand and try to ambush one.

Man you had action!! That's what counts! I hunted hard Friday and Saturday only to see a couple of doe and 2 small bucks!! I know our rut is right around the corner, but I have seen bucks still running together and the doe I have seen have no bucks near. But I'm betting this week it bust loose!!
Still you had action and it beats no action at all! Next time,,,,,,

Sounds like neither one knew you were around so I hope you get another chance, stay after them

more than I've seen... I think my season was done on the 3rd day with the release of one arrow... I've no luck on hogs lately. I hear 'em and smell 'em but no see 'em. A long cold unfruitful weekend it was.
