    UTM when using a GPS

I got a couple PMs asking me about this after I responded to a thread asking for recommendations on which to buy.

The are 2 primary methods to accurately describe a position on a map- lat/long and UTM. UTM divides the map into 1000 meter boxes, instead of minutes and seconds of lat long. When you get the position on the gps and you're trying to mark that spot on a paper topo map it's much easier to most people to do. I buy my topo maps from mytopo.com who are a great bunch of folks to do business with in Montana and make waterproof and tearproof topo maps. They have options on the web site to customize your map, and I keep the lat/long coordinates around the edge if the map, and have the UTM grid across the map.

I like a paper map in the field because I can see the whole area at once, make notes on it with a pencil for future hunts and so several guys can sit down and plan a hunt across an area primarily when elk hunting.

If you google UTM coordinates there are lots of good sites with beginner navigation info.
