Can you really pop out a dent with a plunger?

Some clown backed into my son's car in a parking lot and did not leave a note. The dent is in the rear quarter panel and is 8-10" across - fairly shallow with no crease in the middle. I've heard that sometimes a dent can be popped out using a common household plunger. Might this work? Any special instructions? I'd like to avoid a trip to the body shop if possible.

    Yes it can work!

Depends on the dent but I would give it a shot.

It can't hurt to try. Can you get to it from the inside and push it back out?

I've done it. It does depend on the dent I guess, but it worked well for me.

I would try to push it out first. That is if you can access it.

See if you can find a strong magnet. Wrap it in a towel and pull it out. I pulled out a couple this way. The magnet needs to be one that if you got your finger inbetween it and something metal you may lose it. I almost lost my fingernail to the one I have...

how would you get it off the car? if it is that strong won't it pull the dent too far out? Just asking, sounds like one bad magnet

As long as there is no crease and it is in a spot where you can get a good seal on the plunger, yes it can and does work.

We used to wet the paint a little to get a better seal.

If it is where you can get a deflated basketball in behind it you can inflate the ball with a hand pump and pop it out.

That's what the towel is for. You can't get it off if it is stuck directly to metal. Well you can but it takes about 3 people. With the towel wrapped around it you can get enough leverage to pull it loose.

The magnets I have were from a therapist. They were for a guy who had knee problems and he had to put the magnets on either side of his knee for therapy. One day he had the magnets on his knee and they slid around and pinched him bad. He told his therapist he wasn't using them anymore so he gave them to me.

I've seen a plunger work well once, and not that great another time. If there isn't a crease I think you'll be alright
