I know I can't be the only one that looks at all these posts by guys that have free-ranging axis on their leases and would love to have them on their own place. I've got a great $1500 lease in Brownwood that is covered up in deer, but nothing else. (No hogs, exotics, turkey, nothing.) Is it unrealistic to think that a $1500 lease is out there that has whitetail as well as good chance at an Axis? I just don't ever see me shelling out the scratch that these Axis buck hunts are drawing right now.

Anyone else have Axis envy?

Yes, I share your envy! It is especially cruel that I am building a house on a ranch covered up in HUGE Axis, I gotta (or get to) look at them all day.
I would love to get on a place with them too. In the meantime though, I am trying to gather the funds to book a hunt at Diamond C. Their prices are more than reasonable, best I have seen anywhere. They are a sponsor, check them out

I am FULL of envy over the axis....I was able to take an axis doe last year with my FIL and my family fell in love with it. A few weeks later I returned from my regular lease and the wife asked me if I shot anything. When I replied that I shot a doe, she wrinkled up her nose and said "Whitetail?" like it was a bad thing....lol

The post above from TMC50 says they are covered up with them, but they are very hard to get a shot on. If he was serious, I would imagine that the Diamond C might even be harder with the parade of hunters going through there. (No disrespect meant, but I also imagine that the reason you have to book well ahead is because it's hard to find an open day.) The Diamond C can't operate long by having every yahoo that comes in walk off with an Axis. Kind of like what my daddy told me about Vegas. "son - they don't build these big ol' casinos by making everyone that walks in the door a millionaire."
So they really aren't much harder to hunt at a day lease than free range. Axis are skitish critters no matter where they are. Thats is one reason so many seek them (that and they are very tasty!)
