Went to choke canyon over the weekend for a youth management hunt. Had a friend of mine call and ask if I could go with his wife to take their daughter and the daughter of another mutual friend of ours. Unfortunately both dads got drawn for a bowhunt the same weekend so I said sure would. Had orientation on satuday and got to the blind about 2pm. Had 13 deer coming to the hand thrown corn that evening.
She was scoped in on a doe that we couldn't get a good shot on because of a branch. Well at some point a spike had walked in behind us and was eating apples and corn. Told her to try to turn around without spoiling it and she did...dropped the spike in its tracked....that's my favorite type of tracking.
Saturday morning we got to the stand about 6 after getting my friends wife and daughter set up. I tell the girl I'm hunting with to get her stuff and ill grab the corn and help her get the stuff in the blind after she climbs up.
So we get everything up there and I drive down the road spreading corn and cut up apples. Park the truck and "take care some buisness" before walking back to the stand. I get in the stand and was about to tell her to load her gun when I noticed the gun was not there. So I ask...where's your gun? She's smiles and says. I left it in the truck. I smile back and stand up to start climbing down to go get her rifle. As I take my first step a doe was already rating around a bend where we couldn't see but needless to say I had to scare her off. As I walk down I also see a fawn with her. I go get the gun, get back in the blind and about 45 minutes later the doe and fawn are back. She takes aim and pulls the trigger but misses in front of her. Not knowing she missed we wait about 30 min and get down to see if we see any blood. Nothing to be found. So we go back to blind to for it out and see nothing the rest of the morning. 940 we decide to call it a hunt with one spike and go check again for blood. Still find nothing but this time she wants to look in the woods. After about 10 min in the woods I turn and tell her no farther as I don't wanna get lost about the same time I realize I don't remember exactly how we got where were at. Now I know y u see Orange tape on the videos..lol.
I remember that when the sun rose it hit us in the face so we should walk towards it to find the blind. After another 20 minutes we walk onto the road about 10 ft from the blind. Thank God we made it out as their was no cell service. I also now know to mark a spot with the gps on my phone before going in the woods.
All in all it was a great weekend and got to see two other youngsters take their first deer.
Here's a pic of her with her spike.
