Saturday
Morning

After an uneventful drive up from Houston, Les and I
arrived at Buck N' Boar finding the place soaked by the
evening storms. We went through the
introductions and sat and chatted with the Bassham's and
Leo Martinez for about four hours. At 1:00 a.m., we
decided to hit the sack. We all knew that 5:30 was
going to come early.

After a night's sleep that felt more like a short nap, we
got up, got our clothes on and headed out for our
spot. Leo placed us in a tree that had a pair of
stands set up overlooking a feeder. As the sun
started to shed light on the East Texas woods, I realized
we were in a good spot. About 7:15, with very little
light available to see, a small forkhorn buck made his way
to the feeder. With no corn on the ground and after
having given us a long stare, the buck made his way out of
the area.
Ryan and I sat for another two hours only catching
glimpses of a couple of bucks as they sauntered through
our clearing. It was a great morning, but
unproductive as far as deer hunting goes. On the
walk back, we noticed that a good group of deer had made
their way down the road, stepping in the truck tracks that
Leo had left when he took us to the stand earlier.
I wished Ryan a happy 16th birthday and told him I felt
sure we'd get our chance this evening. Back at the
cabin, Mr. Bassham relayed his morning to us. He had
asked Leo to let him sit in a stand to see what might be
moving. As luck would have it, he had deer all
around him. He made a point to tell us repeatedly,
that he could have drawn and shot any of the deer at
anytime, had he been bowhunting. We're planning on
outdoing him this evening!!
