Clay finally arrived last
night and joined us on this morning's hunt. I
decided to take the ICE Blind and set it up in the
clearing that we had found yesterday. Clay went
out to the ladder stand on the creek that he had set up
previously, and Glenn again opted for his
chain-on.
I made my way through the pine thicket to the
fenceline, and then crossed the fence to the
clearing. Because it was dark, I kind of had to
just pick a spot to set up the blind and hope for the
best. I popped out the blind and quickly brushed
it in to break up the outline. Because the
clearing was freshly cut, there was plenty of green pine
limbs to use to further conceal the blind. Talk
about convenient!
I got inside and began the wait for daylight. I
cleared the ground of pine needles so that only bare
dirt covered the ground inside the blind. I had
forgot my chair, but I toted my Swivel Limb in addition
to all my other gear, so that I could use it as a
seat. It works fine, but is much too tall to see
out the windows of the ICE Blind. I had to sit on
my knees.
I settled in and let things quiet down in
anticipation of daylight. My knees and ankles
began to ache as the daylight began to filter into the
darkness. A chill was in the air, adding
significantly to my discomfort. Still, I was eager
to see my first deer of the season. Unfortunately,
it was not to be on this weekend. I still have yet
to see my first deer of the 2000 season! Glenn and
Clay had equally bad luck. It was disappointing,
but we knew in advance of the hunt that there was a
possibility of not seeing anything. I still think
the property has potential, and expect to take another
opportunity to verify that later in the season!
As we left the property, my attention immediately
began to focus on next week's TexasBowhunter.com group
hunt at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge! In
reality, as much as I anticipated the opening weekend
hunt, simply for the fact that it's opening weekend,
I've been looking toward the Aransas hunt even
more! I hope, even if you can't join us there,
that you'll log on for updates upon our return!
