The slight disappointment
from not seeing any deer on the morning hunt had long
since faded as the anticipation once again peaked as we
prepared for the afternoon hunt. We showered and
dressed, separately of course, at my grandmother's
house and left around 4:30, with all the ladies telling
us how "cute" we looked in our matching Brush
Country camouflage! Several family members are in
town for a birthday party this evening for my uncle,
Steve, so we had a full audience!
We were fully set up in our stands, Glenn in his
Strong Built Deluxe chain on stand, which with its
padded, reclining seat is fit for a long afternoon's
hunt, and me in my Strong Built ladder stand, which with
its welded mesh seat is, well. . . not, by 4:45 pm.
Unfortunately, short of a few more chattering
squirrels, and a pair of bees engaging in a
mating ritual around my head, the evening hunt was no
more productive than this morning.
Again, it was a
glorious day to be in a tree! Now if only the deer
would cooperate!
This being "virgin" property,
we had no idea what to expect in terms of deer numbers
or quality. We are still confident that our luck
will change tomorrow. My optimism stems from a
freshly cut logging road that we found, quite by
accident, that wasn't there several weeks ago when Glenn
and Clay made their lone scouting trip. We elected
not to hunt it this evening until we could verify that
it is on the landowner's property that we have
permission to hunt, but it almost certainly has to be.
We'll place a short call this evening to verify, and if
we get the go-ahead, I may elect to set up my ICE blind
overlooking an intersecting trail on the road.
Stay tuned! |
