Four o'clock came awfully early for me this morning after
staying up until 1 a.m. working on a project for
work. Oh yeah, and watching the finale of Survivor
after purposely not watching each of the previous episodes
after the unfortunate departure of fellow hog-slayer
Michael Skupin to burn injuries. But I digress!
I loaded my gear into my Silverado pickup and left the
house at 5:30. After stopping for ice for the cooler
and a chocolate eclair to start the morning right, I was
on the road headed west toward Sabinal. I had to
make a detour on 290 to stop by Kevin "Outbreaker"
Johnson's house, after calling to wake him up at 6:30, so
I could borrow his ICE Blind. I had originally
decided that we wouldn't need his blind, but after seeing
the potential for rain, I figured it might just come in
handy to keep another hunter dry! Bidding begins at
$25!
I arrived at TruLove at 10:30 a.m., shortly after
Danny, Chris and Cambo had arrived in Danny's truck.
As I pulled up beside the trio, I noticed a nice little
gash across the entire bottom of the passenger side!
Danny had an unfortunate incident in Hondo in which he
attempted to make a left turn, but didn't see an oncoming
vehicle. By the time he saw the other car, it was
too late. He managed to gas the accelerator to
prevent a direct, t-bone impact, but it still did
considerable damage to Danny's Dodge pickup, and even more
damage to the other vehicle.
Fortunately, everybody was fine, physically, except for
Chris' minor shoulder strain and Cambo's knee bump.
After exchanging pleasantries, Bill, Cambo, Spur, Danny
and I followed Steve and J.J. on the corn route and to
look at the different stand locations.
After a hard rain on Thursday night, any sign was sure
to be fresh. From the looks of it, the hogs were
extremely active the previous night. There were
fresh tracks and wallows in almost every location, and all
of the corn from the previous evening was completely gone,
except in a select few spots.
While on the route, we rode by a hog trap that J.J. had
set up. Danny's eye's lit up when we found three
hogs in the pen. Danny had told J.J. that he wanted
to tie one up if there were any there. Although J.J.
had agreed, I don't really think he believed Danny would
do it! We all know better than that, now don't we?!
Not only did Danny rope and tie "a" hog, he
tied up all three of them!
I'm here to tell you the look of surprise, and perhaps
a little concern, on J.J.'s face was priceless!
Danny tied up each of the hogs, with a little help from
Bill and Chris. Of course, I would have jumped in to
help, but I had to film the activity. Yeah, that's
it, I had to film!
Danny tossed the hogs in the back of his pickup for the
short ride to be released in the hog pasture.
When we returned to camp, Bud had arrived. We
spent the afternoon shooting bows and relaxing while
anticipating the evening hunt. Check back later for
details!
